Uncle Bud’s Oven Stew

2 lbs Round steak or chuck steak, cubed
1 large carrot, sliced thickly
1, 4oz. can water chestnuts, drained and sliced
2 celery ribs, sliced thickly
2 onions, sliced into rings
6 oz. mushrooms, chopped
1/2 tsp sweet basil
1/4 tsp pepper
3 TBSP flour
1 TBSP sugar
1 TBSP salt
1, 16 oz can tomatoes, pureed
1 cup burgundy wine


  • Preheat oven to 325 F.
  • Put meat and vegetables into large casserole, or oven safe pot.
  • Sprinkle with basil and pepper.
  • In a small bowl, combine flour, sugar, and salt. ¬†Sprinkle mixture over the meat and vegetables.
  • Pour tomatoes and burgundy over all. Stir lightly.
  • Cover and bake for 4 hours.
